ALOCASIA HYPOLEUCA ‘MAHAPATRA’
CULTIVAR DESCRIPTION: Alocasia hypoleuca ‘Mahapatra’ is a new cultivar of Alocasia hypoleuca that originated in Thailand
The cultivar distinguishes itself through the unique curling/cupping of its leaves, which is likely due to a mutation of genes that control the growth and elongation of the leaf edges. If the edges grow slower than the main part of the leaf, this can give rise to a cupped appearance.
The cultivar name ‘Mahapatra’ (โหรามหาเภตรา) is a compound name meaning ‘great leaf’
Maha - Thai: มหา; Sanskrit: महा - is a common prefix meaning "great" or "grand"
Patra - Thai: เภตรา; Sanskrit: पत्र meaning leaf
It is often also called ‘Bai Hor’ ใบห่อ - meaning wrapped leaf/folded leaf - having to do with the overall shape of the leaf
