ALOCASIA ‘GAJAHMADA’

Unknown Parentage

PARENTAGE: Unknown, subsequent genetic analysis is required

SYNONYMS: N/A

HYBRIDIZER: Considered to be a wild hybrid from the locality of Mount Wonosobo in Central Java, though it cannot be traced back to one collector

VARIEGATION: N/A

DESCRIPTION: This assumed natural hybrid was informally named after Gajah Mada, 14th century leader of the Majapahit Javanese Empire.

Though abaxially similar to Alocasia cuprea any resemblance is likely coincidental, as they are not sympatric and a wild population of Alocasia cuprea in this locality is very unlikely. Reports from local growers also confirm that Alocasia Gajahmada is different from Alocasia cuprea in terms of texture, petiole pattern, and stem structure.

INFLORESCENCE: Red inflorescences reported by collectors
