Alocasia cuprea x Alocasia longiloba ‘Lowii’
PARENTAGE: Alocasia cuprea x Alocasia longiloba ‘Lowii’
SYNONYMS: N/A
HYBRIDIZER: Alocasia ‘Orchid Jungle’ is attributed to the late Tom Fennell, an orchid pioneer who operated Orchid Jungle in Naranja, FL, until it was destroyed in 1992 by Hurricane Andrew
VARIEGATION: N/A
DESCRIPTION: Though not currently in collections, it is believe Fennell created Alocasia ‘Orchid Jungle’ as a recreation of the old Alocasia ‘Sedenii’
In his Cultivated Alocasia, David Burnett identifies some key differences between the two hybrids:
INFLORESCENCE: When comparing it with Alocasia ‘Sedenii’, Burnett indicates that the inflorescences are basically the same, with that of Alocasia 'Orchid Jungle' being the larger of the two. The spathe is deep reddish brown to black with some vertical green streaking. The upper sterile appendage of the spadix is orange while the fertile male zone and the lower sterile zones are snow white. The inflorescence is 3 1/2-4"long with the peduncle very deep burgundy.
NOTES: Historically this was one of the most popular Alocasia crosses, with Alocasia ‘Chelsonii’, Alocasia ‘Gaulainii’ and Alocasia ‘Sedenii’ sharing the same parentage
