ALOCASIA ‘VANGIGO’

Unknown

PARENTAGE: Unknown - either an undescribed species or a hybrid of unknown parentage

SYNONYMS: Alocasia ‘VangieGo’, Alocasia ‘Vangi Go’, Alocasia ‘Vangie Goh’

HYBRIDIZER: Supposedly originated with a Ms. Vangie Go, who LariAnn Garner was told was a famous Aglaonema hybridizer from the Philippines. The plant was put in tissue culture, a hundred or so were produced, and then they were distributed at one of the annual shows hosted by the IAS.

VARIEGATION: N/A

DESCRIPTION: LariAnn Garner describes its leaves as heavily textured, similar to those of Alocasia alba, but with more pronounced characteristics. It has a very large growth habit, with upright leaves, similar to Alocasia ‘Sarian’ with leaves reaching up to 5-6 feet tall.

Newly emerged leaves have bold creamy white veins and the leaf texture resembles cardboard, with very prominent smaller veins on the underside of the leaves. With age, the vein color fades to a light green. Alocasia ‘VangiGo’ petioles are mottled with a brownish coloration. It is reported to produce an abundance of pollen on the inflorescences.

This cultivar is no longer actively grown or sold, but lives on through LariAnn Garner’s Alocasia ‘Imperial Giant’, a hybrid of Alocasia 'VangiGo' and Alocasia ‘Borneo Giant’
